In 2022, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art acquired the archive of artist Sofya Adlivankina, a student of Ilya Mashkov, one of the founders of the Jack of Diamonds art group, and the sister of Samuil Adlivankin, one of the organizers of the New Society of Painters. Bringing together materials dealing with the artist’s creative and professional practice, the archive contains watercolor works created by Adlivankina in the 1920s while studying in Ilya Mashkov’s studio, albums with drawings from the 1920s and 1930s, theater designs, photographs of Ilya Mashkov and Sergey Konenkov’s studio, and documentation of works created by Adlivankina. The archive also includes signed catalogues of artist Samuil Adlivankin’s exhibitions.
About Sofya Adlivankina
Sofya Adlivankina (1899-?) was a textile painter. She was an apprentice of students of the 2nd State Free Art Workshops (1920) and worked in theaters and textile factories. Adlivankina worked as an artist in the sewing and art workshop of the Krasnoe Znamya production plant (1938–1939), the art workshop of the Rosgizmestprom publishing house (1942–1944), the arts and crafts workshop of the Art Fund of the USSR (1948–1950), and the Factory of Artistic Painting and Embroidery on Textiles (1950–1955).
In 1941, she worked at the Turkmen Opera and Ballet Theater (Ashkhabad) on painting costumes for operas that created for the decade of Turkmen art in Moscow, and in 1942 she led a team of artists who painted costumes for the play Akbuzat at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater (Ufa). Adlivankina also worked as an artist and designer for the All‑Union Agricultural Exhibition (1939–1941), where she designed the Siberia pavilion (1941). As there is almost no information about the life and work of Sofya Adlivankina after the end of her career, the exact date of the artist's death is unknown.
