Sofya Adlivankina Archive

In 2022, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art acquired the archive of artist Sofia Adlivankina, a pupil of Ilya Mashkov and a relative of artist Samuil Adlivankin. The archive contains documents (78 items) related to the artist’s creative and professional activities: watercolor and pencil works on paper, theater sketches, printed photographs, and personal documents. It also contains a signed catalogue for Samuil Adlivankin’s exhibition and letters from artist Georgiy Lazarev addressed to Sofia Adlivankina.

Documents in the archive shed new light on the lives and art of little‑known Soviet artists Sofia Adlivankina and Georgiy Lazarev. They include rare documentary evidence of the work of Moscow’s Higher Art and Technical Studios (VKhUTEMAS).

About the Archivist

Sofya Adlivankina (1989–1985) was a Soviet artist. She studied painting in the studio of Nikolai Grigoriev (1917–1919). From 1918 to 1922, she studied at the Higher Art and Technical Studios (VKhUTEMAS) in Moscow (Ilya Mashkov’s studio). She worked as an artist in the Sewing and Arts Workshop of the Krasnoe Znamya production center (1938–1939), the Arts Department of the publishing house Rosgizmestprom (1942–1944), the Applied Arts Studio of the USSR Arts Fund (1948–1950), and the Factory of Artistic Textile Painting and Embroidery (1950–1955). In 1941, she worked as a costume painter at the Turkmenistan Opera and Ballet Theater (Ashgabat). In 1942, she headed a team of costume painters for the performance Akbuzat at the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theater (Ufa). She worked as a designer at the Soviet Agricultural Exhibition (1939–1941) and the Ermitazh Theatre (1945).
