Unofficial Artists in Soviet Book Illustration

Many unofficial artists collaborated with publishing houses as illustrators. This was one of the few opportunities to earn a living legally through artistic work for those whose creative aspirations did not align with the dominant ideology and aesthetics of socialist realism. Featuring books and periodicals from Garage Library and Garage Archive collections, published from the late 1950s onward, this thematic selection includes works by such key figures as Erik Bulatov, Oleg Vassiliev, Ilya Kabakov, Irina Nakhova, Viktor Pivovarov, and Ülo Sooster. It also features almanacs, exhibition catalogues, and publications about the artists’ work as illustrators. Among them is Pavel Gerasimenko’s guide to the display Kabakov Meets Pivovarov in a Corridor of a Publishing House, which was presented in open storage at Garage.

Brought together, these materials provide a valuable source for contextual and art historical analysis. Reflecting on Kabakov’s art, Pavel Gerasimenko observes that he «remains a conceptual artist even while illustrating yet another book, despite insistently denying any creative element in commissioned work.» [1] Erik Bulatov writes about relationships and mutual support within the artistic community: «It was Ilya Kabakov who taught us the fundamentals of the book trade. Having graduated from the book design studio, by that time he was a fully established professional illustrator, securely positioned at Detgiz.» [2] Recalling her husband’s career, Lidia Sooster notes how illustrating science fiction became a form of compromise for Ülo Sooster: «He finally found a way to express his fundamental views on art—a possibility that had been denied to him due to the absence of exhibitions and the severely restricted artistic life in the country.» [3]
