A catalog from the uber-hip GEM Museum of Contemporary Art in The Hague reveals the latest work by the increasingly important twin brother team of Gert and Uwe Tobias. In their virtuoso style, the pair of Cologne-based artists has opened a new chapter in their creative oeuvre: huge 81-by-68-inch works that pay homage to the ancient still-life tradition. These monumental, woodblock-based works, which also combine gouache and collage, are also shown here in eye-popping installation photos. The brothers create a contemporary Cabinet of Curiosities, juxtaposing classical themes like flora, fauna or food with surreal, jarringly bright colors. In barely a decade of work, the Tobias brothers have become major artists, represented in all important collections; here's a perfectly presented sample of their freshest, most provocative work.
